NS 20 Kameel

For the train people, in full: Dieselelektrisch motorrijtuig NS 20 'Kameel'

Built by Alan, Rotterdam 1954. More than half a century old, this one has quite a history behind it. It was built as an 'Inspectie rijtuig' or 'Inspection train', although when I got to know it was in the books as a the NS 'Directierijtuig', 'Magement train'. Given the fact that apart from a toilet it had its own kitchen and a 'meeting room' the latter will have been more true. A special train for the management of a railroad company in a country where the border is never more than 200 km away - those were different days. Note that the train driver is in one of the two cockpits on top of the train - which two humps gave it its nickname, the 'camel' - those who are so extremely lucky that they're allowed to travel on this one have a full view on the tracks on front of the train.
In 1973 the train was converted into a 'VIP train' - people could hire it. Somehow I never got around to doing that...
In 1991 it was sent to the museum, after which the engines were removed for reuse in other trains that were still in use. Shock, horror. However, in 2005 the NS came to realize the error of its ways and decided to restore the Kameel. And this is its present state, in the original colours, in which I happened to see it on Utrecht Centraal Station.
