My Tuscany Book

Fri Jul 15, 2011, 3:34 AM
Hello dear friends,

I've just published my first photobook on Blurb, Four Cantos. Unposed observations in Florence, Arezzo and Pisa. ( www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail… ) As many of you know, I've published a number of books in the past, but these were largely, in Dutch, text-based and for a general market. This is entirely my baby, and that feels good. There may be some technical issues here or there, but it's really mine.
A big reason to publish the book was that I feel that, for all its merits, Deviantart isn't an optimal environment to appreciate art when it comes to concentration, thought and love of detail: torrential watchlists, message alerts and popups and other stimuli all cry for your attention.
:iconcanwegonow:
With a book your lap, it's all different, and whether a reader spents his time with my book in devoted attention or with his thoughts miles away - I'd be equally happy. Like the man avowing that he loved a symphony so much that he never heard the end of it. :meditation:
Another reason is that I simply love making books, not just mine, but anyone's, if they have a subject that cries out for it. It's much like pictures.

The book has 80 pages and is in full-colour. You may recognize a number of pictures that are already in my gallery, but most of the work is unpublished. Also, a number of the pictures that you may know, have been seriously redone. Apart from achieving at least a hint of quality, my concern was that the book was really a book, a flowing visual story that occasionally makes you leaf back and forth, and not a "best-of" collection of pictures with a cover around it. I hate artistic ego-documents, but it has been my experience, here too, that, while the lens may point away from you, it may still show something of your innermost soul. If anything, I'd call my book a "we-document", it's about people, any people, not just tourists and Italian. So, it's not really a travel book either.
The direct link to its page www.blurb.com/books/2324435 :iconcrushplz: You can see it in full preview but keep in mind that the Flash and the screen resolution (72 or 96 ppi) is less than print resolution (300 ppi), so some parts will look less crisp than in the book. Photobooks aren't expensive, but they cost a lot of money, if you know what I mean. There's a reasonably priced softcover edition, a slightly less cheap hardcover in dustjacket and the bibliophiles may go for the imagewrap-hardcover that I've given thicker paper with a shine.
:reading::squee:

I'd like to thank everybody here who helped me on the way, from the ones that even supported me when I was still shooting bugs in the garden to the ones that provided me with help and constructive criticism. Even if you don't buy any of these, I wish you much fun with viewing my baby! :iconbrewplz::woohoo::heart:

I really want to buy this one, but shipping to Serbia is ridiculous!!! 28eur...
Awful...
Anyway, I am so happy for you, the book looks great, and the subject is wonderful.

*Denneris had the same complaint (see below), it's completely mystifying what issues Blurb or US Mail have with Serbia. :? :iconcanwegonow:
Photobooks are rarely cheap, but if they cost twice their price because of the postage, it's ridiculous.
I've ordered a few copies with shiny paper to sell directly, and I can send one to you with 6,32 E postage added to the current price, just let me know if you're still interested. :)

Yes, I have two books on Blurb and I haven't ordered them because they are too expensive even for direct selling.
Of course I am interested, but I am going to Greece shortly and I will be back in September. Can you send it to me then? I really appreciate this!!!

You have books on Blurb? :faint: Can you send me the link?

September is no problem, I'll be away for some time in August too. Maybe we can combine something, I don't know if it's possible to order copies as an author and have them sent to another address, but if so, you could send your copies to me, I could send them on to Serbia with my own book, and it would probably be a lot cheaper.

You know them both :)
They are Yard books [link] and this one [link]
They were both too expensive on Blurb for most artists so we made them download free here, so anyone can print them as they wish. If you wish, I can print them for you here (I think it is lot cheaper than in Netherlands, I will see how much exactly)and send them, when we are both home.

But, I am now preparing my own books. First will be "Ionian windows" but more in street manner not architecture, and the other will we "Ionian winds" mostly about sailboats, but more in seascape/landscape manner.
I am awful, I am preparing them for 7 months now...but finally they will be ready in September. Those two, I will put them on Blurb for sure.

It would be nice to have them in print. The first has almost all the regular of the Yard and the second one is still a great concept, worth a repeat if you ask me. I still regret that I didn't participate. :)

My extra copies from Blurb arrived just this morning, so I can send one anytime you like. :)

I'm a terrible procrastinator. I used the deadline of the Blurb "Photography Books Now" contest to keep me going and get it finished; I had been thinking and preparing for some time too though.

I will print them when I get back in September, if that is ok. We have to choose paper format and paper. Any preferences?
And than you can send me your copies. That would be wonderful.
Thanks a lot Eric :D

Bravo Eric! It looks fantastic!  I really want to buy it, and I was going through their shipping calculator and appears that they price of shipping it to Serbia will be more expensive than the book it self? Do have any other method to sell the book? I would really love to have it!30E for such a book is OK price, but to add 35 more E for the shipping is a bit too much for me :(

30 euros is ridiculous. :faint:

I just checked - the cheapest rate for a 450 g parcel from here to Serbia, using plain mail, is 6.32 E. I've ordered the same book myself yesterday, and the postage was 6.49 from the US to Holland. Are you sure you didn't select a hardcover book or something like that?

However, I don't know exactly when, but I plan to order a number of books in one go (hoping their postage won't add up to something like 150 E or so  ). It wouldn't be a problem to send one on, but it might take a month or so, for we are on vacation in August when they probably arrive.

OK, thanks! I'll check again. I am pretty sure that I didn't choose a hard-cover, but I'll recheck anyway. This sounds good if you could send it to me! We'll be on holidays in August too, but we can organise something for September if I don't get it before.
